Rei Kawakubo

By Manya / April 22, 2023

Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese fashion designer and the founder of the avant-garde fashion label Comme des Garçons, which she established in Tokyo in 1969. Known for her unconventional and often deconstructed designs, Kawakubo has been recognized as one of the most influential fashion designers of all time. Kawakubo’s designs often feature asymmetrical shapes, exaggerated proportions, and unexpected combinations of textures and materials. She has also incorporated unconventional materials into her designs, such as plastic, paper, and even stuffed animals.

Kawakubo’s early designs were heavily influenced by the punk and new-wave movements of the 1970s and 1980s. She often used elements of deconstruction and rawness into her designs, such as frayed edges, exposed seams, and asymmetrical shapes. She also experimented with unconventional materials, such as industrial fabrics and repurposed textiles.

“She always pushes me to do something new.”

As her career progressed, Kawakubo continued to push the boundaries of fashion, exploring new forms and shapes. She developed her signature “body in pieces” aesthetic, which involves creating garments that are constructed from separate pieces that are then assembled together. This approach allows for a greater degree of flexibility and movement in the finished garment.

In recent years, Kawakubo has also experimented with digital printing techniques, creating designs that feature bold, graphic patterns and bright colors. Despite her avant-garde approach to fashion, Kawakubo’s designs have been embraced by a wide range of fashion-conscious consumers, including celebrities and fashion editors.
